Verity Movie Review: Anne Hathaway & Dakota Johnson Go All Out In This Unhinged Erotic Thriller

Verity Review Rating:

Star Cast: Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Harnett.

Director: Michael Showalter

What’s Good: Anne Hathaway going into villain mode is quite entertaining.

What’s Bad: The mystery is so much in the background that I would hesitate in calling this a thriller.

Loo Break: At any point during the second act is a good time, as the movie moves into erotica more than any other genre.

Watch or Not?: Watch only if you are a huge fan of the three leads, but there is not much here on a cinematic level.

Language: English (with subtitles)

Available On: Theaters

Runtime: 117 Minutes

User Rating:

The year of Anne Hathaway continues with one more film that is set up to become a success just like The Housemaid did last year; a film made for the BookTok crowd that is always searching for the next big page-turner, and of course, its eventual film adaptation, which in this case is being led by Hathaway and directed by Michael Showalter, a director that is just made for this type of generic filmmaking showcase.

Verity Movie Review: Script Analysis

Verity is an adaptation of the novel written by Colleen Hoover, which became a huge bestseller not too long ago thanks to the book finding viral coverage on TikTok, and also having enough controversial content to keep the conversation going for a long time after the readers turned the last page, and so we find ourselves in front of a film adaptation that should be exciting, mysterious, and entertaining, but that sadly falls into the ridiculous territory not many movies want to be in.

The reason, well, Verity is sold as a mystery, but the plot relies mainly on erotica to keep things going, and in today’s day and age, that not might be the most effective tool to entertain, especially for movie goers who are actually searching for a story, and not just horny people interacting with each other, and that is basically what happens here for about two hours.

There is a mystery to be sold, don’t get me wrong, but it feels like something that is being developed little by little on the background instead of the forefront, where the attention is mainly on Dakota Johnson’s character and her relationship with an abandoned and solitary husband, played by John Harnett; the dialogue is quite a challenge for the actors, and it often sounds like a very funny stream of jokes.

However, for those audience members who love camp, then the movie is just a treasure of riches, as the movie really takes itself seriously enough that the results of many conversations ends up being funny or hilarious, and this is a tone that is often avoided by many films, but will work in this case for some audience members, while others will definitely pray for the movie to finish as soon as possible.

Verity Movie Review: Star Performance

The main plot, the dialogue and the overall story might stumble a lot, but the performances really bring everything together and make the movie more than tolerable, especially when it comes to Anne Hathaway, an actress that for a while was seen as unsympathetic, but that now feels like just an old friend, and to see her here going full villain mode is quite amazing, and she just nails it, making every scene she is in the best in the entire movie.

Dakota Johnson is always charming, and this is the type of movie she seems to excel at, but while good, I don’t think she has the presence to share the screen with Hathaway convincingly. Josh Hartnett, on the other hand, is always a welcome presence. I’m glad to see him more and more on the big screen once again.

Verity Movie Review: Direction, Music

Michael Showalter is exactly the perfect director for a movie like this one, he has excelled at directing movies that feel quite tame and just plain entertaining, so you could say he brings his professionalism to the table but not much else, there is really no style on display on any of the scenes or in any shot for that matter, he lets the story speak for itself, and maybe that is for the best in this particular case.

The shot composition is as basic as it gets, but it gets the job done. That can also be said of the blocking and just the overall editing of the movie; it just works. Showalter doesn’t get in the way of the story, but it would be great if he could have enhanced it somewhat; but that is not the case.

Verity Movie Review: The Last Word

Verity is not a very good film; the mystery is left on the wayside, and the focus on the erotica elements just makes it so boring that it is hard to ignore, the actors do a good job, but they cannot save the film from being too basic on almost every level, but don’t get confused, this movie will find its audience, might it be on theaters or in the digital market, but it will find it, and it will keep the fires burning in favor of this kind of novel adaptation.

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: Sparsh Shrivastava Is Find Of This Decade – Dhadakpur’s Escape To Become Mirzapur Works Despite A Forced Twist To Justify Its Title!

Dupahiya S2 Review: Sparsh Shrivastava Is Find Of This Decade - Dhadakpur's Escape To Become Mirzapur

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: Star Rating:

Cast: Gajraj Rao, Renuka Shahane, Sparsh Shrivastava, Bhuvan Arora, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Dinesh Lal Yadav (Nirahua), Yashpal Sharma

Creator: Sonam Nair

Director: Sonam Nair

Streaming On: Prime Video

Language: Hindi

Runtime: 8 episodes of 40 minutes each

Last year, when Dupahiya arrived with its first season, it was such a breath of fresh air! A year later, it still feels the same as it arrives with its season 2. However, when season 1 ended, my only concern was how they would take this forward and turn it into a franchise when the main conflict had been resolved. Season 1’s main arc was a bullet demanded by a potential groom, who flaunted his status as a state government employee, settled in the city. To a villager, that is an achievement, and the social commentary hit brilliant highs with its plot intact! So when the entire issue was resolved, I was curious how they would take this franchise forward, with this name. Does Dupahiya S2 fall into the usual traps and tropes? Yes. Does it manage to come out shining, stronger, and more brilliant? A dicey one to answer!

For the unversed, season 1 was about a family of four – Banwari Jha (Gajendra Rao), Malti Jha (Anjuman Saxena), and their children Roshni and Bhugol (Shivani Raghuvanshi and Sparsh Shrivastava). Then there is another family of two – Pushplata Yadav (Renuka Shahane) and her daughter Nirmal (Komal Kushwaha). Roshni’s alliance is fixed with a boy called Kuber Tripathi, who flaunts his government job, just like his father. But the alliance can reach the wedding altar, only if the bride’s family gifts a ‘Dupahiya’ to the potential groom. But all hell breaks loose when the Dupahiya goes missing, and the entire Dhadakpur gets involved in finding it, because I forgot to tell you! Dhadakpur has a reputation –  it is a village with 0% crime rate, and might get an award for the same!

Dupahiya Season 2 Web Series Review Out: Struggles With Its Plot! ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: What’s It About:

Season 1 ended with Roshni challenging Kuber to secure a government job, move to the city with her merit, and enjoy life on her terms! Season 2 starts on the same note! Dhadakpur is no longer crime-free since Dupahiya was stolen in the last season, but Pushplata is trying to bring basic amenities to the village and wants to run for election. Roshni is struggling to work on the challenge, but the only problem is that she is not smart enough in her studies. Banwari Jha is suspended and is looking for options to fulfill his responsibilities as the head of the family! Meanwhile, Bhugol is an internet celebrity but only as a cross-dresser!

The village finds hope when a telecom company arrives in Dhadakpur to install towers and ensure they have access to a 5G network. It looks like a win-win since the tower will be installed on someone’s land, and that person will be paid a monthly allowance! However, the story takes the disruptive route as villagers are told about the side effects of 5G – right from affecting their sperm count to more environmental hazards like extinction of the sparrows! Village decides against the tower – Banwari’s only hope for monthly earnings!

And thus begins another chapter of struggle, confusion, planning, and plotting that blends with a cheating nexus and a scandal that follows! How does Dhadakpur manage not to become Mirzapur? Do they finally win over their societal and moral compromises, or do they finally lose their innocence? All of it becomes the plot of the 8-episode series!

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: What Works:

The soul of Dupahiya has always been its warmth and authentic rural flavor. Writers Avinash Dwivedi and Chirag Garg deliver an easy, fresh, and fun screenplay that glides smoothly without drowning the narrative in heavy-handed, unnecessary drama. The team keeps its roots firmly planted, and crucially, never turns village culture into a parody. Meanwhile, director Sonam Nair demonstrates an absolute mastery over this world, knowing her characters inside out and keeping the tone cozy and accessible for family viewing. There are absolutely no attempts to inflate the stakes artificially, and Avinash and Chirag make sure that they stay true to their roots. The village is still rooted in its village. Dupahiya treats it as home, and that respect is what gives the humor its warmth.

Dupahiya Season 2 Web Series Review Out: Sparsh Shrivastava Wins & Big Time! ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: Star Performance:

Sparsh Shrivastava effortlessly solidifies his position as the find of this decade. Delivering an absolute masterclass, he anchors the emotional and comedic beats with a brilliance that is rare. His act is the strongest asset of the season and the reason the show works as well as it does. Alongside Shivani Raghuvanshi, he forms a brother-sister duo that wins the season. Their dynamic carries the emotional and comic weight of the story, and the pair deserves credit for making the sibling bond feel believable.

Gajraj Rao, as the head of the family, wins with one scene with his son. It is a reminder that a seasoned actor doesn’t need a long arc to make an impact. Meanwhile, Renuka Shahane, who had a central arc in the last season, is sidelined here. It is a disappointment, as the show doesn’t make the most of her presence this time.

Bhuvan Arora as Amavas is used well, and his character fits neatly into the ensemble. Yashpal Sharma and Nirahua should be the next Tom and Jerry of OTT. Their pairing has the push-and-pull that makes such duos work.  Nirahua, in particular, is on a winning streak with his recent digital appearances. If the streaming world keeps casting him like this, he will become one of its most dependable comedic drama appearances that would work for a show.

Komal Kushwaha’s Nirmal gets a promising sub-plot, but the writing doesn’t support the actor with a story that holds together.

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: What Doesn’t Work:

The major stumbling block comes from the forced setup used to justify its title. Reconnecting the resolved conflict of Season 1 required a very forced comeback that feels way off! The show started with a plot that looked like the main story – the issue of the tower and its placement, and honestly, that should have been cooked well, just like the Dupahiya plot in the last season! However, the show takes a steep turn with Roshni’s struggle with studies, leading to a cheating scandal involving Nirahua and his coaching classes! As if this were not enough, the story tries to reconnect with why it is still called Dupahiya, and the connection is so forced that you can feel the pressure!

The additional narrative starts struggling with pacing in certain stretches, leaving a few character arcs underexplored. The subplot involving the tower could have been significantly tighter and punchier. Furthermore, Komal Kushwaha’s character, Nirmal, picks up a promising subplot that unfortunately becomes directionless far too quickly. Another major problem with Dupahiya in its entirety is that it misses out on sharp, instantly quotable one-liners- lacking that signature conversational hook that makes shows like Panchayat pop. I mean, you say, Dekh Raha Hai Naa Binod, and you instantly know you are talking about Panchayat. You say, Are aapko nahi pata, and you know you will talk about Gullak. But you do not have that instant connection with Dupahiya!

Dupahiya S2 Review: Sparsh Shrivastava Is Find Of This Decade - Dhadakpur's Escape To Become Mirzapur
Dupahiya Season 2 Web Series Review Out: Shivani Raghuvanshi & Sparsh Shrivastava’s Duo Is Endearing! ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Dupahiya Season 2 Review: Last Words:

Dupahiya Season 1 worked because it was a truly daring and sincere social commentary without any drama! Dupahiya S2 just reverses the equation, and that is where it misses the entire point! However, despite its narrative hiccups and forced title-justifying twists, Dupahiya S2 manages to retain its inherent charm and somehow brings everything together for a delightful win. It remains a rare, wholesome entertainer that can be enjoyed with the entire family, not offering hearty laughs but still tapping into nostalgic family dynamics.

And that is no small achievement for a sequel that had to find a new reason to exist. It stumbles on a forced twist, loses pace at places, leaves some arcs unexplored, and misses the memorable dialogues that would have made it stand out. But it keeps its humor, its roots, and its respect for its characters intact.

3 stars.

Digger Movie Review: Alejandro G. Iñárritu & Tom Cruise Go All Out In A Bizarre, Ambitious & Messy Political Epic

Digger Review Rating:

Star Cast: Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons.

Director: Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Digger Movie Review
Digger Movie Review: Tom Cruise goes all out in in Digger (Photo Credit: Warner Bros.)

What’s Good: The cinematography, set design, and production design are just incredible.

What’s Bad: The film becomes too clever for its own good and keeps shooting itself in the foot with how many ideas it wants to work with.

Loo Break: There’s probably a chance at the start of the second act, but there is so much important information that you will definitely miss something important.

Watch or Not?: This is a film for cinema lovers, and it is in that realm where it will find its bigger defenders but also its greatest haters.

Language: English (with subtitles)

Available On: Theaters

Runtime: 129 Minutes

User Rating:

Cinema is struggling; there’s no doubt about that, and so it is getting harder and harder to see filmmakers go for the bold and strange when it comes to big-budget filmmaking, which is why Digger feels like such an outlier and definitely a candidate for one of the best films of the year, although it is clear it will be incredibly divisive for all its political content, strange visuals, and overall chaotic tone.

Digger Movie Review: Riz Ahmed stands out in Sprawling ensemble. (Photo Credit: Warner Bros.)

Digger Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script, written by Iñárritu alongside some of his faithful collaborators, is truly a thing to behold; it is composed of so many ideas that at some point someone must have said that it is a complete mess, and yet they went off with it, resulting in a mix of both clever and powerful moments with some heavy-handed messaging and just plagued with exposition about what the film is, what it must mean, and how you, as an audience member, should feel about it.

The writing will definitely rough some feathers, but at least, for me, it will do it in a good way, pushing buttons and taking many audience members out of their comfort zone, as the movie takes hits at basically everyone; liberals, conservatives, socialists, artists, businessmen—everyone is under fire, and while some will see it as a blow of fresh air, some will see it as aimless and pointless.

The truth is somewhere in the middle; there is definitely a reason why Iñárritu is trying to make everyone angry with the movie, but I appreciate his execution, as Hollywood has definitely been too lenient over the past couple of decades, which has become stale, as it seems every single movie offers the same message, over and over again, so with Digger, a new message — a meaner and more tragic one—takes center stage, and I am all for it.

However, that many ideas, characters, conversations, plotlines, and tangents make for a messy execution, and while the movie has a lot of things to say, it says them in the most erratic possible way, and maybe that is the point: to try to piece it all together, but not many will see it as an enterprise worth taking, especially casual audiences who will probably check out early as the movie goes around and around on all the topics it wants to tackle.

Digger Movie Review: Star Performance

Digger is, of course, led by Tom Cruise, in what could be one of his best roles ever. This is basically what would have happened if they had made a movie about his Tropic Thunder characters and gone all the way to its logical conclusion, and Cruise knows what he is doing, being hilarious, scary, charming, and ruthless all at once. He will probably get a nomination for this when awards season arrives.

The rest of the cast is also working on a high level, with Riz Ahmed being a clear standout, which really makes me happy, as the actor has truly been everywhere at this point, but I don’t think he has been given his flowers. Maybe it will be the case with Digger, and the same goes for the rest of the actors, all of them being a tiny piece of this huge puzzle that needs to be solved, but very few will do it in the end.

Digger Movie Review: Alejandro G. Iñárritu brings his wildest visual style to Digger  (Photo Credit: Warner Bros.)

Digger Movie Review: Direction, Music

Iñárritu is an Oscar-winning director, so there is very little left to prove for him and his profession other than managing to stay relevant, and he does, as he combined his style with that of Wes Anderson, resulting a very clear visual style that feels just artificial enough to make you pause, but also makes the hyperreality of the film palpable, in ways that a normal look would just make everything feel too much of a caricature.

Emmanuel Lubezki, also known as Chivo, the legendary cinematographer, is also doing some of his best work here, throwing aside some of his more characteristic tools while keeping others, like the use of wide-angle lenses and the use of long tracking shots. It is all there, but there is enough new as not to feel like he is treading water.

Digger Movie Review: Digger turns political chaos into a bizarre cinematic experience (Photo Credit: Warner Bros.)

Digger Movie Review: The Last Word

In the end, Digger will be controversial, thanks to its willingness to be different, which I appreciate ,even if the resulting film is a bit bumpy, messy, and too enamored with itself at times; there is enough here to make it a worth watch, even if you end up hating it. With Cruise delivering his definitive performance, the one that will probably get him that Oscar that has avoided him for so long, we just have to wait and see how the rest of the industry reacts.

Prahaar Trailer Review: Rajkummar Rao Fighting Ajmal Kasab & His Lawyer Jaideep Ahlawat Assuring “Mera Hisaab Bajrang Bali Lenge” Makes You Breathless!

Prahaar Trailer Review: Rajkummar Rao Fighting Ajmal Kasab & His Lawyer Jaideep Ahlawat!
Prahaar Trailer Review: Rajkummar Rao Fights A Case Against Ajmal Kasab! (Photo Credit-Instagram)

Some dates are historic, and some are just a nightmare! 26/11 is the latter for every Indian, as India faced one of its most brutal and deadliest terrorist attacks in human history when terrorists infiltrated the economic capital of the country. Mumbai Terror Attacks have one name etched in our memories – Ajmal Kasab, a 17-year-old boy whose pictures and videos went viral as he turned a beast with an AK-47, killing innocents and rejoicing. Kasab was captured, and a trial followed where he faced the wrath of public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam! Rajkummar Rao turns the man for his biopic Prahaar, and the trailer of the film makes you feel restless and breathless!

November 26, was a day, that needs no explanation for any Indian, and the trailer builds its story around the same, recreating the horror of that unfateful night! The visuals are not disturbing; they make you feel choked. However, very quickly, the trailer pushes 26/11 to the background of every frame, and it wisely turns to the less-told story of the man who had to prove it in court. Rajkummar Rao plays Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor who led the case against Ajmal Kasab.

The trailer gives him a quieter kind of intensity than the usual loud courtroom hero. He plays a man carrying a national wound and a legal burden together, and looks pitch-perfect as he challenges the defense lawyer, Jaideep Ahlawat. In one of the scenes, Rao very calmly challenges Ahlawat and tells him, “Ujjwal Nikam Hanuman Jayanti ke din paida hua tha! Mera hisaab bhi Bajrang Bali lenge!”

Looking at Rajkummar Rao grow from Shahid to Prahaar is surreal as a cinema buff! While his National Award-winning film proved how well he handles courtroom drama, this one just seals the deal! Meanwhile, Jaideep Ahlawat as Kasab’s lawyer brings the tension as he struggles against Nikam’s calm and unsettling ease. The Rao-Ahlawat face-off promises to be the film’s USP!

Director Avinash Arun is promising a story that is intense but not fireworks. It will make you feel breathless and heavy, as the trailer leaves the same impact! Looks like a gripping trailer that sets high expectations for Rajkummar Rao and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Produced by Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films, Prahaar is a story of courage, conviction, and an unrelenting pursuit of justice. Prahaar – The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam releases in cinemas on October 16, 2026.

Check out the trailer of the film here.

Whalefall, the upcoming survival thriller starring Resident Evil star Austin Abrams, is set for release in theaters soon. The movie is set to be released next month, and there are a few strong line-ups next month. With Halloween, people will be more drawn to the horror movies, thus this has a very strong chance of performing well.

It is based on the 2023 novel by Daniel Kraus, who co-wrote the script with the film’s director, Brian Duffield. The book received quite positive reviews and was also included on an esteemed media house’s list of the Best Thrillers of 2023. It features Austin Abrams in the leading role with Josh Brolin and Elisabeth Shue in key roles.

How much is the film tracking to earn in its opening weekend in North America?

The Austin Abrams starrer survival thriller is eyeing a modest opening weekend at the box office in North America. According to early estimates, the movie is on track to earn between $10 million and $15 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office [via Box Office Pro]. For the unversed, another survival thriller, Heart of the Beast, was released this month. It features Brad Pitt in the leading role, and a lack of star power could be one reason Whalefall might not land solid numbers at the box office in its opening weekend.

Heart of the Beast collected $20 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office. It is still below the domestic debut of the Brad Pitt starrer. Meanwhile, it is another release starring Austin Abrams, but his Resident Evil will still be his biggest opening weekend at the North American box office. For the uninitiated, Resident Evil collected a franchise record $60.1 million in its domestic debut. According to early estimates, Whalefall is on track to remain $45 million to $50 million behind Resident Evil‘s opening weekend in North America.

What is the film about?

The film follows a scuba diver who, while searching for his father’s remains, is swallowed alive by a sperm whale and must fight to escape from its belly. Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin-starrer Whalefall will be released on October 16.

Note: Box office numbers are based on estimates and various sources. Numbers have not been independently verified by Koimoi.
