Seeing a controlled release in theatres, Laapataa Ladies had a limited run at the box office during its first week in theatres. The film had brought in 4.12 crores in its opening weekend and then the weekdays brought in a little over 2 crores more, with 50 lakhs coming on a consistent basis. This sort of stability allowed at least some shows to be reserved for the film in the second week as well, and though there is Shaitaan bringing in very good numbers and Article 370 still running well, one waits to see how Laapataa Ladies make a mark commercially.
Incidentally, each of these three films is a Jio Studios production and has arrived on back-to-back weeks. Yesterday, on Women’s Day, the film’s tickets were priced at just Rs. 99/-. Also, there was the partial holiday of Mahashivratri. As a result some sort of collections did come in, which has pushed the total to 6.50 crores*.
One now waits to see the kind of jump that comes in for the film today & tomorrow. While the reviews have been largely positive, one would have liked that to translate into better footfalls as well since the film deserves it.

The next major aim for the film is to somehow reach a lifetime of around 10 crores. Post that, one waits for the OTT release for the film. Rest assured, it would find quite some acknowledgment and appreciation for itself on that medium and audiences will wake up to the kind of light-hearted social satire that filmmaker Kiran Rao has made with absolute newcomers.
