Wildwood is the first original animated film from Laika Studios in seven years. The stop-motion animation has opened with solid numbers at the box office in North America this Friday. The Travis Knight-helmed movie opened at #3, and it almost matched Coraline’s opening day gross at the domestic box office. Keep scrolling for the deets.

The stop-motion animation received near-perfect ratings and reviews from critics and viewers alike. It has gathered a lot of buzz. Its teaser and trailer have become among the most-watched, joining big tentpole releases including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and more. The movie, based on Calin Meloy and Carson Ellis’ novel, is winning hearts all over.

Wildwood at the North American box office

According to Box Office Mojo, Wildwood landed at #3 in the domestic box office rankings in North America on its Friday opening day. The movie collected $4.3 million on its opening day at the box office in North America. It includes $1 million from the Thursday previews. It is the first original animation in 7 years, which is keeping pace with the studio’s earlier releases distributed by MGM and Focus, posting an opening day close to Kubo and the Two Strings ($4.1 million), Coraline ($4.5 million), ParaNorman ($4.6 million), and The Boxtrolls ($4.9 million). It has also comfortably surpassed Missing Link’s $1.6 million opening day.

The stop-motion animation has thus come close to the opening-day box-office collection of Coraline, Laika’s all-time biggest hit in North America. Therefore, if the latest release has a similar repeat value, it can surpass Coraline’s original box-office collection.

More about the film

Wildwood is now eyeing an estimated $11 million to $14 million three-day opening weekend, with strong word-of-mouth helping the film overcome Fathom’s limitations as a small distributor. The film has been released across 2,752 theaters in North America.

Directed by Travis Knight, the film follows the adventures of Prue McKeel as she sets off to the forest outside Portland to find her kidnapped brother. Wildwood was released on October 23.
