Wildwood’s early X [formerly Twitter] reviews are out!

It has been learned that Wildwood received widespread praise from critics, which could help the film shine at the box office. Greek Eccentric’s Justin Lawrence said, “#WILDWOOD is pure imagination brought to life on a MASSIVE scale. Every frame is packed with wonder, heart, and detail that demands the BIGGEST screen. In an age of AI prompts, you can feel the people behind this. It’s a jaw-dropping celebration of human artistry at its finest.”

Tomatometer-approved Zach pope writes, #Wildwood isn’t just a masterpiece of cinema… it’s an INSTANT CLASSIC. Whimsical in every sense, emotionally breathtaking, and overflowing with imagination, this is a stunning allegory for growing up, losing your innocence, and discovering who you truly are in a world that constantly challenges you.” Read the full review below.

Actor, writer Nick van Dinther said, “In a lot of ways, WILDWOOD feels like LAIKA’s magnum opus. The story may be a touch simple, but the animation is breathtaking and does things I’ve never seen before. There is still room to grow, but visually, this the greatest stop-motion animated film of all time.”

Another critic, wolfy44 said, Got done watching #wildwood and if I’m being honest this has to be the best animated movie I’ve seen this year and the best movie Laika has made

😭

, like the amount of effort they put into this and visuals with its compelling story especially is just absolutely insane, I will say though that there was scenes that felt really like intriguing and extreme to the point where it’s just an intense war movie that you don’t really get to see in animations from time to time, I just think it deserves more attention than it’s already getting really.”

Adam patla @ CIFF adds, “Animation was my first love in film so #Wildwood is everything I dreamed it would be and more. An epic fantasy that embraces its darkness without hesitation, allowing for a richer thematic experience. There are sequences that rival some of the greatest fantasy films of our time that I couldn’t believe they pulled off. A win for animation, a win for cinema, a win for art.”

Matt Harris said, “16 years in the making, and every single second was worth it. #Wildwood is the absolute embodiment of cinema—carrying the kind of storytelling, heart, and soul you usually only see from classic Studio Ghibli.

Not a single flaw from me. An instant classic.”

“The stop motion animation in #Wildwood left me breathless. Absolutely understand why it took them 16 years to make – and even THAT seems like a miracle. Made me laugh, made me cry. So much unbelievably impressive & beautiful artistry on display,” said Taylor Blunden.

Film critic Matt Neglia said, “In awe and tears at what was achieved here by the wonderful storytellers, animators and craftspeople at @LAIKAStudios. Those final 20 minutes are beyond stunning, up there with some of the best battle scenes ever put to film.”

Erik Davis had said, “There’s something wonderfully fearless about LAIKA’s #Wildwood. A breathtaking feat of animation and craftsmanship, it reminded me of dark fantasy classics like LABYRINTH and THE DARK CRYSTAL, when children’s adventures weren’t afraid to get weird, scary and genuinely dangerous. Everything about this film is terrific, from its stunning visuals and richly imagined world to its memorable characters. I love how it embraces the darker, stranger parts of its story and goes places many animated family movies today would shy away from. And it features my favorite movie sidekick of the year. Curtis FTW!”

JRGhaddar writes, “The fact this was done by hand is just one of the most incredible feats of artistry in filmmaking I’ve ever seen.   The story is great, the performances are great, it’s epic in scope.   It truly is an exceptional piece of filmmaking.”

MPA Accredited Critic Junior Felix said, “Just got out of @LAIKAStudios #Wildwood and I’m numb. It’s SPECTACULAR! It’s not only my favorite Laika film but It’s one of the best films of the year. It’s a dazzling feast for the eyes that I was not expecting. That third act is a technical marvel filled with beautifuly intricate battle sequences that were jaw-dropping. Wildwood is for the outsider in all of us. A true classic that deserves to be seen on a BIG screen.”

Tom Chatalbash added, “#Wildwood genuinely left me speechless by the time the credits began to roll. This is a staggeringly beautiful animated achievement, unbelievably rich in visual and emotional scope, Knight and his insanely talented team making every frame look miraculous as they weave an emotionally powerful fairy tale of grief, growing up and venturing into the unknown that feels like a wholly enveloping hybrid of Pan’s Labyrinth and Lord of the Rings through their singular LAIKA lens. The animation is so good I often forgot it was stop motion, especially during the climax, which may just be the most breathtaking stop motion set piece I’ve ever seen. Simply put, once you see this on the big screen which you ABSOLUTELY should, it’s abundantly clear why this project took so long to be made, the passion and artistry leaking out of every frame. Holy hell, what a picture. Easily the best animated film of the year.”

John Paxton adds, “I have to double down on something I said about #Wildwood last  night, and it’s about how right at the dawn of new technology, you often get a masterpiece from the old.”

What is the film about?

The film follows Prue McKeel and her classmate Curtis Mehlberg as they venture into a hidden magical forest to rescue Prue’s abducted infant brother, Mac, from a murder of crows led by a mysterious woman named Alexandra. Along the way, they discover a fantastical world filled with magical creatures and warring factions. Laika Studios’ Wildwood will be released on October 23.
